What 44 Real Estate Brokerages Taught Me About Core Values

By Craig Chee

After consulting 44 real estate brokerages, I realized one key difference every top performer had in common. Most owners ignored this completely.

The key differentiator was simple: the best brokerages had thoughtful core values that they acted on. The least successful brokerages barely paid attention to them.

The owners with inconsistent production only focused on closing deals. When their capacity hit their business’s operational ceiling, they inevitably made decisions that weren’t aligned with their intentions.

The owners with consistent production prioritized their core values. Those values were a north star for who they hired, how they treated clients, and how they treated each other.

Without strong core values, brokerages constantly cycled through feast or famine. They never made any time to work on them because they weren’t a priority.

With refined core values, they ran like a well-oiled machine. Their core values were “states of being” that their team truly embodied.

The words we choose to align ourselves with matter.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help you find those words:

  • 1Is this truly a value that you use to base decisions on, or just desired attributes you want to see in results?
  • 2Does this value apply to how you want your team to act with each other when nobody is around?
  • 3Do you express this value often in your personal life as well?
